Yesterday all of us were hit with another earthquake. At 7.4 on the Richter scale, it was not quite as large as the original quake, but it managed to damage Nepal in ways we may never understand. The experts of the world told us many things, and we believed them. Another heavy quake was not likely, the USGS said. UN certified “earthquake resistant” apartment buildings that we were told would withstand such shocks were now cross-cracked down to their foundations.
Kathandu-ites wasted no time in forming their tent cities and the mood is that they are in no mood to trust anyone’s opinion on earthquakes again. This wasn’t supposed to happen. We will make it. Nepal “will rise” as the local graffiti says, and it’s is inspiring to see the many ad-hoc renderings of Nepal’s Dharara tower–the visual symbol of this disaster–emerging from the rubble. Still, this one hurts and the people of Nepal may never trust nature–or their own constructions–in the same way again.
